A sea of colour surrounded Alberton Oval as 700 community members participated in the Spirit Colour Fun-Run delivered for the first time at the Port Adelaide Football Club through a new partnership between Nunkuwarrin Yunti and Power Community Limited (PCL).
At first glance, the event was a sea of colour and smiles. However, the annual fun run is designed as a vehicle to deliver Nunkuwarrin Yunti’s Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program which addresses the danger of smoking, particularly with the growing popularity of vapes amongst young people.
With the slogan ‘colour your future, don’t smoke it away’ forming a core message at the event, young people were educated on the impact it can have on their health and wellbeing while participating and at the on-site educational expo.
Hosted by Australian Television personality, Luke Carroll the event was attended by several dignitaries including Deputy Premier Susan Close MP, included a kids’ activity zone, and a complimentary morning tea and lunch.
Community Programs Team Lead, Christine Glenn said the inaugural partnership and event was an important initiative for the clubs not-for-profit.
“The partnership with Nunkuwarrin Yunti and the TIS program was an important initiative for PCL to support, in addition to our already established programs," Ms. Glenn said.
"It further expands our role in closing the gap aligned to health outcomes for First Nations communities, and ensure we continue to promote important health messages.
“To see a sea of 700 community members enjoying themselves at Alberton, all while learning important messages around health and wellbeing was incredible.
"I’d like to thank Nunkuwarrin Yunti for their partnership in bringing this event to life.
“It’s definitely a partnership and event we will look to continue next year and beyond”.
